Tottenham showed some resilience in the win

Last season Tottenham lost this match to Aston Villa. In one of the many games the team gave away after taking a lead, Spurs squandered their chances and ultimately let Villa come from behind and win 1-2 over them last season.

In fact, the entire theme of last season really was the inability to hold the lead and win matches they should have won. Coming off the losses, having conceded the equalizer to a very hungry Villa team, it seemed like the match was destined to be like last season’s story of points dropped from winning positions.

Instead, Tottenham dug in and punched back. It was a quick counterpunch, the ball up the line from Sergio Reguilon to Son Heung-Min. Son was able to beat Korney Hause to the left and crossed the ball past several defenders, including goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. As Lucas Moura and//or Matt Targett bundled the ball into the goal for the Spurs to regain the lead.

After dropping so many points last season from winning positions and having been pegged back by Villa twice in as many matches, finding the resilience to score the go-ahead goal and then hang on to win shows this team may be more than what we saw for most of September or even last season.

Bouncing back from being tied, breaking the losing streak, and taking some places back in the table has the potential to turn the season around for Tottenham. With seven matches across three competitions to come over the next month, Spurs need some momentum for another big stretch in the season. The win over Villa just might be it.
