Tottenham Projected Defenders

A couple of our projected starters played midweek but are still ready to go as the combination for the team moving forward may be found this weekend.

Sergio Reguilon (LB)

Sergio Reguilon played over an hour on Thursday against Mura in the Conference League and Ben Davies was nowhere to be seen. It turned out that Davies was having some appendix issues and likely is not available Sunday either. Reguilon would have started Sunday regardless but the extra minutes may or may not be a good thing for the young defender.

Eric Dier (CB)

Eric Dier did not have a great game against Arsenal but he also did not make any clear and obvious errors as he did last season. It was clear Dier was still recovering from his injury issue and we have to hope that is gone with Watkins’ speed and Ings’ movement. Dier needs a good match to keep his job with Joe Rodon on the cusp.

Cristian Romero (CB)

Like Reguilon, Cristian Romer started midweek but unlike the Spaniard, the Argentine played the full 90 minutes. Showing off a wide range of abilities on and off the ball, it is growing more obvious each time he is on the pitch, Romero is the best defender on the team. He needs to start against a good and active attacking line on Sunday.

Emerson Royal (RB)

Japhet Tanganga was replaced last week by Emerson Royal as Tottenham tried to stem the tide against Arsenal. Tanganga only had one poor play where he missed a tackle pretty high up the pitch leaving the team exposed defensively. However, ever since he arrived from Barcelona, Emerson Royal has seen ample minutes all over the pitch. In reality, Royal is a right-back and we get to see some of that on Sunday against Villa.

Hugo Lloris (GK)

After three clean sheets in three games in August, Hugo Lloris and Tottenham did not keep one clean sheet in September as Spurs conceded nine in three matches. The reality is Spurs are neither as good as the first month nor as bad as the second and this is true for Lloris too. Still a top-class keeper on his day, Lloris could use a big game for his own and the club’s confidence.
