Many fans felt like it could not get worse than losing to Brighton at the weekend. However, losing at home to a lackluster Chelsea side is a new low for the current Spurs squad. Whether the problem is injuries, the formation, the coaching, or the players, Tottenham Hotspur look truly lost.

Sure Spurs were marginally better in the second half but that was more a reflection of Chelsea reverting back to Lampard’s ways than it was Tottenham taking the game to anyone. So what went right and what went wrong for Spurs in another abject defeat, this one 0-1 at home to Chelsea.

What Went Right for Tottenham

Not much really went right for Tottenham. Chelsea had as many shots in the first half as Spurs managed in the entire game and completing only 82% of your passes simply is not good enough to win and compete at the Premier League level, especially when the opponent completes 89% of their passes.

When Serge Aurier is your best player, you know you are in trouble.

Do not get me wrong, Serge Aurier is a fine right back, if he were being asked to play that position. Despite being set up as a player out of position, Aurier propelled the few opportunities Spurs had in the match. Aurier was the one on the right flank who actually drew a foul – not go down because someone was near – that led to Heung-Min Son’s free kick.

Unfortunately, Aurier was unable to get his header on goal, but the play was all Aurier from winning the kick to winning the cross. Likewise, Spurs best chance in the second half came from Aurier combining with Son and Moussa Sissoko on the right flank to eventually putting a cross in for Carlos Vinicius.

The Brazilian was unable to redirect the header onto frame and Spurs best chance of the match in open play was gone. Some may think it is proof of why Vinicius has not been playing, I kind of see it as the opposite, had the man played more than 68 minutes through 20 matches in League, he might have been more prepared when called upon.

Nevertheless, neither opportunity was finished and Spurs did not get much else going offensively. Lamela had an Erik effort that Mendy saved well. Lucas spun and blasted one over. At least they both managed the one miss in about 30 minutes of play. Heung-Min Son waited 93 minutes to fluff his lines and completely blow the only real look at goal he had all game. This lack of offense should not be surprising given Spurs seem set up to fail and look listless in their effort, which are just a couple of things that went wrong for Tottenham.

What Went Wrong for Tottenham

It is hard to not write everything went wrong for Tottenham. From two players standing there watching Eric Dier commit what has to be one of the stupidest fouls ever in the box to José Mourinho trying to defend Dier and say something about the call Tottenham have simply lost the plot. Never their fault, always the referee or an injury or something else, Spurs are a shell of the team that was romping earlier this season.

The lack of accountability for anything on the pitch is certainly difficult to watch as many players walk around, hoping someone else cleans up the mess their poor pass under pressure likely created. As fans we must really understand Chelsea was NOT good today, far from it, yet Spurs never really looked like they would take over the match.

Again we are left with more questions than answers . At this point, it seems neither the players nor coaching is good enough, as Tottenham continue to spiral down the drain of what was once a very promising season.
