Tottenham Coach and Substitute Ratings

Going with the exact XI we had predicted, Tottenham used four of the five available substitutions as José Mourinho took advantage of a big Spurs bench and the desire to compete within the squad. Ultimately, both the substitutes and Mourinho did what they needed to do for Spurs to win the game and advance.

Ben Davies – 6.5

Davies was brought on with about 20 minutes to go as Reguilón had a yellow and Mourinho was not taking any chances with a 2-goal lead. Davies really had little to do during his 19+ minutes on the pitch as the ball was being controlled in the midfield and the Welshman’s focus was on keeping the clean sheet.

Harry Winks – 7

Harry Winks made his presence felt in his 19+ minutes on the pitch. Although in for Lucas Moura, Winks went central and pushed Moussa Sissoko wide. Winks worked to get on the ball on the night and had 26 touches in his time. Twice as many as Davies who came on at the same time for comparison.  Maybe most impressive Winks did not miss a pass, going 23 for 23 in his time on the pitch. If Winks is to push Sissoko and Sissoko is to push Winks, on Tuesday Spurs saw some of both and benefited.

Japhet Tanganga – N/A

Japhet Tanganga was a surprise substitute with about four minutes left in the match. Tanganga came on for Pierre Højbjerg in the midfield. Working as a holding midfielder after Højbjerg went out from the cleating. Did complete 10 of 12 passes during his brief appearance.

Carlos Vinicius – N/A

Carlos Vinicius subbed in for Heung-Min Son at the 89th minute. Vinicius did manage to get a couple touches in his brief time in the match and continues to show he has the skills to be a legit hold-up player for Tottenham. Not enough time to impact the match but did not have too.

José Mourinho – 7

Everything about the performance from Tottenham was solid. Spurs were on the front foot from the off and worked extremely hard without the ball to keep Brentford in front of them. Mourinho’s mentality is clearly taking hold and Spurs advancing to a Cup final is the evidence. Was finding areas for improvement immediately following the game, such is Mourinho’s desire to improve and win.
