Earning their first League win of the season in the club’s first game under coach Rehanne Skinner were just two of the firsts Sunday for Tottenham Hotspur Women.

Tottenham Hotspur Women got several firsts on Sunday, but maybe the most important was their first FA Women’s Super League victory of the season. Those three points, along with three first time goal scorers, in their new coaches first game had Spurs Women all smiles at the end of 90 for the first time this season marking a good start under a new coach.

New Coach Skinner

Rehanne Skinner took over for Tottenham Hotspur on November 19 following Spurs draw with last place Bristol City Women just a few days prior. Fortunately, Tottenham have not played since that game on the 14th, giving Coach Skinner a little over two weeks to begin implementing her philosophy on the team.

Sunday’s game marked only the second time this season Spurs Women have scored more than one goal in a game, and the first time they have scored more than two. While goals on a penalty and a free kick certainly helped, you still must create the opportunities, which the Women did taking 13 shots on 57% possession. This was a big game for the team as Spurs came in six points beneath Brighton in the table and left only two back.

Other Firsts for Tottenham Women

It certainly helps that Coach Skinner now has a fit and ready Alex Morgan, who started, was quite active all over the pitch, and scored for Spurs. Like Skinner’s first win in her first game, it was Morgan’s first goal for the Tottenham Women since joining in the summer. Besides Morgan scoring her first for Spurs, Tottenham had two other first time goal scorers for the season.

Kerys Harrop struck a beautiful left footed free kick from just outside the corner of the penalty box. The in-swinging ball from the right side of the pitch never gave the keeper a chance and zoomed straight for the corner. At the time the goal gave Spurs a 1-0 lead and was scored following a foul committed against Morgan.

For Angela Addison, the speedy sparkplug, she was making her first appearance this season and came through with a wonderful goal in the second half to give Spurs the 2-1 lead. The goal itself was a real team effort. Addison was the third woman running on the play after Kennedy hit the long ball from a back pass. Morgan then won the flick and Addison did the rest.

After Morgan had flicked on a header near midfield Addison scrapped for the ball. After a little tussle and some nice footwork, the little dynamo popped free and sped toward the goal. Addison took a nice touch to round the keeper and doing well to keep her balance as she got a little shove in the back. Angela then tuck the ball into the empty net.

The scoring was completed after a foul in the box led to Alex Morgan stepping up and scoring her first goal for Tottenham Hotspur Women. You could tell from the reaction of both Morgan and the team, there was some real joy and relief in Morgan finally getting off the mark. The three points doubled Spurs total to six for the season. The Women are now in 9th place in the table a full four points above relegation. Spurs next host 11th place Aston Villa Sunday as they look to make it two in a row.
