Where do Tottenham actually stand on Bruno Fernandes interest?
By Gary Pearson
The Daily Mail is now reporting that Tottenham have absolutely no interest in signing Sporting Lisbon’s marked man, Bruno Fernandes.
So where do Tottenham actually stand on signing the diminutive 24-year-old?
Even though we’re only a few weeks into the current transfer period, I know, being a Spurs supporter, that your patience is probably wearing thin. If not, you have the poise, calmness and composure of a seasoned Buddhist monk. Either that or you’ve created an inner zen, drawing from numerous past experiences.
If you believe the latest unverified account by the Daily Mail, Manchester United are now the sole pursuers of the Portuguese international. That tidbit of news seems entirely too convenient.
At this point it’s hard to believe anything the Mirror or Daily Mail has to say, and nobody would fault you for disregarding totally those sensationalist publications.
Temporarily being the Devil’s Advocate, Sky Sports presenter Michael Bridge is also under the impression that Fernandes “isn’t” on Spurs’ transfer short list.
Any chance Fernandes is coming to Spurs?
When the rumours about Fernandes to Tottenham picked up steam, everyone understood he was, decidedly, the club’s second priority. First and foremost, Tottenham have their eyes squarely set on landing Giovani Lo Celso. By most accounts, Tottenham are the frontrunners in their pursuit of Lo Celso. However, as per usual during transfer season, conflicting rumours exist.
Of course the Mirror doesn’t go as far as discussing the source of Tottenham’s disinterest in Fernandes, which could also mean there isn’t one.
It’s pure rhetoric, absolute conjecture and propaganda which, as usual, serves the interests of Manchester United.
The Daily Mail goes a step further, saying Liverpool and Manchester City have also dropped out of the running for Fernandes. Portuguese news outlets originally linked the midfielder to Tottenham, which became Ground Zero of this particular transfer hysteria.
As you know by now, take everything the Mirror, Daily Mail, Sun and other publications of the like with a grain of salt. While Fernandes definitely isn’t Tottenham’s first priority, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a reputable news outlet that discounts entirely Spurs interest in the Portuguese international.
So where does that leave us?
Though the reports lack accreditation and veracity, it is seeming more unlikely that Fernandes will become a Lilwhite. However, that doesn’t completely discount the club’s chances of signing the Sporting man. More so, the growing unlikelihood of his move to Tottenham is due more to the Spurs’ preoccupation with signing Lo Celso.
The speculation surrounding Fernandes will become completely moot if Daniel Levy is able to quickly secure Lo Celso. Once the Argentinian has put pen to paper, nobody will care whether Tottenham are interested in Fernandes.
Until then, though, Tottenham supporters’ patience will be, like a Kenyan marathoner’s, running thin. Frustration is a natural byproduct of transfer season, but the annoyed sensation Spurs supporters feel, due to an extended spell of inactivity, is measurably amplified, and totally just.
Everyone is on edge, and this latest Fernandes “news” has only magnified an angst that reverberates in Tottenham quarters far and wide.
