Tottenham will be making moves to sign new players this summer, insists Mauricio Pochettino, though they will only come when the time is right.

Such assurances came from Pochettino in a press conference held ahead of Saturday night’s pre-season friendly match against Manchester City.

Though the press conference was just as notable for Pochettino’s just-polite-enough shutdown of rival managers’ comments this week, this latest tidbit should come as a relief to transfer rumor-starved fans.

To date most of the scuttlebutt surrounding Spurs’ efforts this transfer market have had to deal with players leaving the club. Kyle Walker already departed for a fee exceeding £50 million, and Eric Dier is still rumored to be nearing the exit for a similar amount.

More from Tottenham Transfer Rumours

Though some news of incoming transfers floats to the surface — Tottenham are consistently linked with a improbable big-money move for Everton’s Ross Barkley — none have yet to bear out into reality.

Far from suffering under the burden of criticism however, more often than not Spurs receive praise for their lack of excess. While the rest of the Premier League happily inflates the price of even the most mediocre of players, Pochettino and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy calmly wait for the bubble to burst.

To seasoned Spurs fans, though, that was never going to last the whole summer. After selling Walker — not to mention Nabil Bentaleb, Federico Fazio and Clinton Njie — there is more than enough cash to restock this summer.

Which is why Pochettino’s assurances — as quoted by the BBC — are hardly a surprise.

"“Our moment will arrive. We are calm because our squad is competitive. We have a plan. We have a very clear idea of what we want.“There are a lot of rumours about the big sides spending money and it looks like Tottenham is not ambitious.“I want to tell our fans ‘don’t be worried’ because we will move in the market.”"

Spurs can afford to take their time here due to their previous efforts insuring that Pochetitno’s squad stay together this summer and beyond. All of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Hugo Lloris, Danny Rose and Eric Dier — among others — signed new contracts over the past year. With the squad largely intact, there is little need to test the waters of the transfer market.

Which isn’t to say that it can be avoided entirely. Depth is still an issue at Spurs, just as it was last summer, and Pochettino will be interested in creating a rotation that can compete both domestically and internationally.

Next: Tottenham don't need rivals' pity or praise

Tottenham should see at least one or two signings before the transfer window closes on August 31st. Who those players will be — or if indeed more current Spurs players will be sold — remains to be seen. But there was never a scenario where Spurs got out of this summer without spending a single pound.
