Latest Tottenham Transfer Rumors Roundup
By Ryan Wrenn
January is shaping up to be a fairly uneventful month for Tottenham, but that doesn’t stop the rumor mill from churning along.
Mauricio Pochettino took on perhaps the loudest of these rumors in a pre-match press conference on Friday.
“We are not talking about that Wimmer leaving internally,” the Argentine manager said. “I am still very happy with him, he is still very young.
“When he brought him he was not only for the present but for the future. I don’t expect that players will leave the squad in January, it makes no sense.”
Such clear and unambiguous statements won’t stop people from speculating though. Wimmer’s descent down Pochettino’s pecking order makes him an obvious source of speculation. While he was the clear backup to Tottenham’s starters last season, he’s taken a backseat to Eric Dier in recent months.

Clubs both domestic and abroad have been linked with Wimmer’s services. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if some sort of move — permanent or temporary — ends up happening, if only to appease the player himself.
Wimmer’s not the only Tottenham player struggling for opportunities. But for EFL Cup starts and a brief substitute Premier League appearance, Tom Carroll’s roll at the club has been virtually nonexistent. Compared to last season’s modest but promising contributions, that’s a significant downgrade for the player. Expect him to take advantage of any interest elsewhere in England’s top flight.
Less reliable rumors surround the likes of Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies, both of whom were included in the Guardian’s own team-by-team transfer roundup. Whether or not there’s any actual interest for Tottenham’s backup full-backs remains unclear, but it stands to reason that Pochettino wouldn’t be too excited to lose two of his most rotated players last season.
Which brings us to possible additions. Tottenham made clear their intentions in the summer — Pochettino and Daniel Levy clearly prioritized depth. Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama were meant to understudy Harry Kane and Eric Dier, while Moussa Sissoko was cover for at least two other positions.
Some might suggest that these additions weren’t going far enough. Arguments could be made for adding another proper winger or perhaps even a third striker. The January transfer window’s inflated prices are no time to due what might amount to mere cosmetic work however.
Some rumors ignore this logic and refuse to die. Tottenham were once again linked with Real Madrid’s wantaway playmaker Isco on Friday, for instance. It likely doesn’t need to be rehashed, but bringing in an A-list signing midway through the season on (likely) record wages doesn’t fit into Tottenham’s strategy on or off the pitch. Perhaps Isco arrives at some point, but it won’t be this January.

The same thing can be broadly said about Ross Barkley, another player linked with Tottenham of late. Finding a place for a player that expects to start week in and week out just isn’t possible, particularly with Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli finding form. And that’s not even considering Érik Lamela’s imminent return from injury.
In sum, despite much news to the contrary, Tottenham’s January will likely still be a quiet one. Anything can happen, though. Perhaps a series of good results in the coming weeks makes the club think that a title push is worth the cost of a new addition. Right now, even the most optimistic fan won’t be counting on that scenario.
