Tottenham’s lack of movement in the transfer window is due to finding the right pieces to compliment what Spurs already have. A process that isn’t as easy as it seems.

While other top Premier League clubs have spent plenty of money to bring in big-name stars or talented and rising players, Tottenham have once again stuck to a simple formula: get good value on seemingly unknown players.

Now Victor Wanyama is far from an unknown player, in fact he and Toby Alderweireld are known commodities that Spurs’ transfer committee were able to sign in successive summers. Which is quite a feat in of itself as footballers tend to join more prestigious clubs if given a choice.

Name recognition-type of signings are what fans look forward to on a yearly basis instead of the Clinton N’Jies, or Vincent Janssens of the world.

And dare we say… the Dele Allis and Eric Diers?

Both Alli and Dier were two players that no one had ever heard of prior to their arrival and now are considered cult favorites at White Hart Lane.

So what does this mean? It’s less about who is signed and more about who Mauricio Pochettino needs to bolster his squad each season.

Simply put, let a new signing play at least one year (two years if he suffers a major injury) with his new club before casting judgment on what could maybe end up being a bad investment.

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris said it best in that Spurs only need to fine-tune what they already have rather than fully upgrade.

And looking at what was a major weakness last year, Pochettino’s bench was a glaring hole that needed to be fixed and he has done that with the addition of Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama.

“Some teams need to rebuild everything,” Lloris told Press Association Sport (via TEAMtalk).

“Last season we did well and we just need some fine-tuning.”

“It’s about details now; we have the basics.”

With Tottenham boasting a young squad all throughout last season, Hugo Lloris believes that three of Spurs’ five delegates representing England in the European Championship (Alli, Dier, Harry Kane), will be good experience for them despite losing to Iceland.

“They are still young and they’re going to improve. One positive thing is they played their first big tournament, during the Euros. It was a really good experience for them.”

Now that everyone has returned to Spurs’ training facility and have gotten some good rest as well as minutes in their pre-season tour, the French goalkeeper has said that Tottenham is ready to begin another long season tomorrow.

“They feel good at Tottenham, they feel at home.”

“The spirit is great. We have the talent, we work hard, and we need maybe [to] be more [like] winners in our mentality. Step by step.”

“The Champions League will be a good thing for them.”

“We have the basics, and everyone has to keep the same mentality; try to improve individually and everyone will improve.”

It’s easy to want Tottenham to get their transfers done in a timely manner but it’s quite hard to find the right players who fits this team.

Anyone can point to a position that needs to be upgraded — central midfield, attacking midfield and winger — but listing off names and what they’ve done isn’t enough.

More than anything, this is why time and time again Spurs are considered “slow” when they need to bolster their squad in the summer and winter transfer windows respectively.

Signing a player based on his position and what he did, but not taking into account his fit with Pochettino’s system, could result in a waste of money.
