Tottenham, Dortmund in for Götze as Liverpool Pulls Out
With Liverpool pulling out, this leaves Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund as the only two clubs vying for the 24-year-old’s signature.
Yesterday, German newspaper Bild, reported that Mario Götze was on Tottenham’s radar. The thought of having a World Cup winner, a five-time Bundesliga champion and an attacking midfielder who could play on the left and right wings as well as a false nine, were too good to be true.
After all, players of Götze’s stature simply don’t choose Tottenham over bigger clubs. But the fact that Götze has refused to sign a contract extension with Bayern Munich, this has given Spurs enough hope to sign the German midfielder along with Borussia Dortmund.

With the signing of Sadio Mane from Southampton for £30 million, the Liverpool Echo has stated that Jürgen Klopp won’t pursue his former player. Having an abundance of attacking options at Klopp’s disposal made a move for Mario Götze seem slim.
As for Bild, they have claimed that Tottenham met with Mario Götze’s father, Jürgen, twice during the European Championship to see whether the German international would be a good fit for the north London club.
So where does this leave Dortmund? Although BVB are the only other club, besides Spurs, trying to sign the 24-year-old, a reunion would be hard to fathom. Because Götze joined rivals Bayern three years ago, he has supposedly burned his bridges with his former club.
Technically speaking, this should leave Tottenham in pole position.
Now, if Spurs signed Götze — for £20 million, despite Bayern Munich paying his £31.5 million release clause — Götze’s weekly wages which is at £115,000-per-week (£5.97 million-per-year), automatically makes him a starter by default.
Where Mauricio Pochettino would eventually put the 24-year-old in his starting XI is a different matter altogether. That being said, the main problem with Tottenham being linked to Mario Götze isn’t about his transfer fee, but more so with his wages.
Because Harry Kane is set to earn £100,000-per-week on his new contract, the fact that someone who may or may not be coming into the team, will earn more than Tottenham’s best player means that Spurs’ wage structure will be off-balanced.
Make no mistake, Mario Götze’s track record since his days with Borussia Dortmund means he fully deserves all of the money that he has earned. Unlike say, Michy Batshuayi, who wanted at least £100,000-per-week after one good year.

This is something that Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy will have to discuss amongst themselves with Kane as well.
Whether it’s fine to pay someone else more money after already paying Kane as much as they could. Which would be less than the 24-year-old currently earns by £15,000-per-week.
Simply put, Kane who is Tottenham’s best offensive player if you’re looking at goals as the key statistic only, should be the highest earner on Spurs’ squad.
If Götze joins Tottenham he’d be the highest earner, but won’t be the main focus of this team. At best he’d be a complimentary player, which isn’t a knock on the German international, but everyone knows who is the main threat on Spurs — it’s Harry Kane.
Mario Götze would help build up play at attacking midfield, or left/right wing, with the help of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen/Érik Lamela, but it would be Kane who would finish off all the chances that Tottenham have most of the time.

For now, until more news regarding this transfer rumor clears up, the only thing that is known is that Tottenham have managed to contact Mario Götze’s father about his son’s fit with Spurs.
The chances of Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy landing the World Cup winner is as slim as the 24-year-old reuniting with Dortmund, but at the very least it’s exciting to know that Tottenham is in the conversation.
