Transfer fee: £4 million
Former club: Nottingham Forest (Football League Championship)
Years with Spurs: January 1, 2005 — August 26, 2014
Stats: 324 appearances, 10 goals, 6 assists (all competitions)

Though he was rather unceremoniously sold to Hull City in 2014, Michael Dawson was a stalwart in Tottenham’s defense for the better part of a decade and helped ease the club through the transition away from Ledley King. He might not have been the fastest centre-back out there, but what he lacked in pace he made up for in leadership ability. Even André Villas-Boas and his insanely high lines came to find the relatively sluggish Dawson an indispensable part of the backline.

In the end, Dawson probably deserved more than he got. Service such as his is a rare thing in football these days, but unfortunately there are always limits. He wanted playing time, and as he entered his 30s it became increasingly unlikely he’d get that in a young Tottenham squad.
