The 4231 balance was very good

For this game, Spurs were without a defensive midfielder. Even Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are not number sixes by trade, but are more natural there than the available players here. Therefore, Ange tweaked the set up, and went with a 4231 - playing Bergvall and Sarr as a double pivot, and James Maddison as a ten.

In particular, Sarr and Maddison were sublime, but Bergvall also managed to have a good game in there. We know how good he is on the ball, but he looked impressive off the ball too, making three interceptions and one tackle during the game. Something interesting to note, is that the midfielder's old manager says that he sees his future as a number six.

We saw Ange trial those two in midfield together at the back end of the Rangers game, no doubt in preparation for this one. Weirdly, the Swedish teenager was actually not as good on the ball as he was off it. You'd rather it was that way round though if it had to for now be one or the other. His on ball quality is clear to see. The fact he can show a tenacity to his game could be key moving forward.
