Tottenham Hotspur's summer transfer moves haven’t just been about addressing current gaps; they’re also laying the groundwork for future signings. This is clear from their interesting option to buy Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis. The 22-year-old midfielder, who’s been catching eyes in La Liga, is now a key part of the buzz around Tottenham’s future plans.

Johnny Cardoso's impressive performances in last season’s La Liga didn’t go unnoticed, attracting the attention of several top clubs across Europe. His potential has made him a highly sought-after talent. Real Betis president Ángel Haro confirmed that many teams were interested in the young midfielder. Despite the strong competition, Tottenham managed to secure an option to purchase Cardoso as part of the agreement for Giovani Lo Celso’s transfer to Betis. Haro told Mundo Deportivo:

"Johnny is a player that interests not only Tottenham but many other teams, he has a great projection. In this case, within the Gio operation, they asked us for an option to buy for a value that was important and interesting and we gave them that option."

The agreement between Tottenham and Real Betis allows Spurs to purchase Cardoso in the summer of 2025 for a fee ranging between £21 million and £25 million. There are also reports that if Spurs choose not to activate this purchase option, they might still benefit financially through a sell-on clause for Cardoso, despite never officially owning him.

While the fee might seem steep for a player with relatively little top-level experience, it's a calculated gamble. If Cardoso maintains his impressive form and continues to develop, his market value could skyrocket to around £40 million. This potential rise would make Tottenham's initial investment look like a shrewd move.

Now, if we take into account the words of the Real Betis president, it’s clear that several clubs will likely try to secure Cardoso’s services in upcoming transfer windows. Everything will depend on the North American midfielder’s performance, and, of course, on the Spurs’ management's decision.
