In a devastating blow to their campaign, Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a resounding 4-0 defeat against Newcastle United, relegating them to 5th place behind Aston Villa FC.

Up next, the team faces a challenging lineup of fixtures in the following order:

  1. Arsenal, Apr. 28
  2. Chelsea, May 2
  3. Liverpool, May 5
  4. Burnley, May 11
  5. Manchester City, May 14

With an incredibly tough schedule ahead, the team will also culminate their season with a showdown against Newcastle United on May 22.

However, the goal for a club of this size should be the Champions League, with no excuses.

There should be no other option.

For the 2024/2025 Champions League season, the competition will see an expansion to 36 clubs participating, up from the usual 32. Notably, two of these additional spots will be awarded to the top-performing nations from the current season.

The Premier League is currently in third spot in the fight for the top two places, behind Italy and Germany.

To make the Champions League, Tottenham essentially must either: 1) earn the top 4 in the standings or 2) secure 5th place with England reaching that top 2 spot.

Aston Villa has 60 points, 32 games played with a 17 goal difference.

Tottenham have 60 points and 32 games played, with a 16 goal difference.

The team has choked in the past few games.

Tottenham must make the Champions League, in a do-or-die fashion

And while this is still the first season for new head coach Ange Postecoglou, much of the momentum and trust he has gained throughout the year will take a hit without a Champions League spot. Whether it's clinching the 4th place spot or leveraging the new qualification system, the atmosphere is charged with a sense of urgency.

"In this make-or-break scenario, the mantra resonates loud and clear: whatever it takes."

With Son Heung Min turning 32 in July, this is also likely very much the last few years where we will see a Son at the top of his game.

For a player of his caliber to exit the team without any trophy in hand, it will be a wasted career in terms of his trophy cabinet for the club being empty.

It will not be easy, but the pressure is now on for Ange Postecoglou.
