For matchday six of the 24/25 La Liga season, Bryan Gil's Girona and Alejo Veliz's RCD Espanyol were in action away to Valencia and Real Madrid respectively. Let's take a look at how things went.

To begin, it was a very disappointing day for Gil, as Girona fell to a 2-0 defeat at Valencia, giving their hosts their first win of the season. In fact, Valencia had only picked up a singular point from their first five games of the season before this win against Girona.

To compound things, Gil had to accept a cameo off the bench, replacing former Tottenham Hotspur forward Arnaut Danjuma, who had started on the left-hand side in place of Gil. It was just 11 minutes in total for the on-loan Spurs man on Saturday afternoon. This result leaves Girona 12th in the table, with seven points from six games.

For the first time since joining Espanyol, Veliz started the game on the subs bench rather than the starting XI, as manager Manolo Gonzalez opted for Walid Cheddira to partner captain Javi Puado instead for the trip to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Argentine striker was introduced at half-time, with the score still 0-0. Nine minutes later, Espanyol took the lead, courtesy of an own goal from Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Unfortunately, the star power of the hosts would prevail, and they went on to win the game 4-1. It was difficult for Veliz to make much of an impact on the game, with Espanyol doing so much defending and work behind the ball, and as such it was a quiet cameo from Veliz.

This result leaves Espanyol 13th in the table, with the same points as Girona, but a minus three goal difference compared to their counterparts' goal difference of minus two.

Next up for Gil and Girona is a midweek La Liga game, as they host Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday, with kick-off being 18:00 BST. As for Veliz and Espanyol, it is also a midweek home game, with Villarreal visiting on Thursday, also an 18:00 BST kick-off for that one.
