Former Tottenham player set to retire after suffering heart attack
Last week, it was reported that former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and academy graduate Nabil Bentaleb had been hospitalized with an undisclosed illness on June 18. Today, French outlet RMC has confirmed that Bentaleb suffered a heart attack, casting doubt on the continuation of his football career.
According to RMC, Bentaleb experienced the heart attack during a five-a-side match, although the exact location remains unknown. Immediate treatment included the use of a cardiac defibrillator and "cardiac massage" before he was swiftly transported to Lille Hospital for further medical care.
Shortly after his arrival at the hospital, Bentaleb underwent surgery to have a pacemaker installed and is expected to be discharged soon.
This alarming incident raises concerns about the future of Bentaleb's career. At 29 years old, he is relatively young to suffer a heart attack, though he is at an age where professional footballers often begin to contemplate retirement.
The French FA Medical Commission is anticipated to provide a recommendation on Bentaleb’s ability to continue playing, but ultimately, the decision rests with the player himself.
