5 forwards Tottenham could sign, plus our top pick
By Tom Vinall
Ivan Toney - pros. Toney is a player who has proven he can score goals in the Premier League. In the 22/23 season, Toney scored 22 goals and created 12 big chances in 33 Premier League games, only being outscored by Erling Haaland and Harry Kane (SofaScore). Whilst his form has dipped this season after an initial flurry upon return from suspension, Toney has a large enough sample size to prove he can score at this level. He is also a homegrown player, which Spurs could always do with, especially in attack given their lack of other homegrown players. He has one year left on his Brentford deal, and all signs point to him not extending, so could well be affordable.
Ivan Toney - cons. Toney turned 28 this year, and whilst he isn't old by any means, and players nowadays play well into their late 30s - this is what you are going to get from Toney. He is unlikely to go up another couple of levels so what you see is what you get, and whilst it is important not to be reactionary, what we are currently seeing is an 11-game Barron run in front of goal. There have also been doubts placed upon Toney's personality. Toney is a very confident person, who backs himself all the way. Whilst that in isolation isn't a bad thing, probably a good thing, there is a fine line between confidence and someone who thinks he is better than he is and makes sure people know. Ange has consistently spoken about dressing room culture and making sure he doesn't have any "bad eggs" around the place, so if Spurs were to go in for Toney, you can make sure that Ange will be doing thorough checks to see if he has the right personality.
Verdict - third or fourth choice signing. Don't make a priority, but sign if first-choice targets can't be done.
