Is Tottenham’s link to Conor Gallagher still alive?

Chelsea has endured a rough start to the 23/24 campaign under former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, but English midfielder Conor Gallagher says he is happy at the club.

If there’s one thing football fans can universally agree on, it’s that Chelsea has fallen off their pedestal as one of England’s elite sides like a lead balloon.

Their 12th-place finish last season was astonishing, and despite finding new management and a seemingly endless influx of fresh talent over the summer, their struggles have continued with only one win so far this season.

Nearing 24, Gallagher, who wore the captain’s armband in Chelsea’s draw against Bournemouth last weekend, might benefit from a move to North London.

Spurs have been eyeing Gallagher for a while now and were looking likely to sign him in August before ultimately completing the Brennan Johnson deal and failing to make space on their swollen roster.

Now, despite Chelsea’s setbacks and the continued links with Spurs, reports from Football Insider say the player is happy at his childhood club, casting a massive shadow over whether Spurs will be able to make a deal for him in January.

Just a day earlier, the news outlet had reported Spurs’ interest in yet again pursuing the Englishman come January.

On Chelsea’s end, it seems like an offer will be considered, if for the right price, especially with the added depth to their midfield after a productive transfer season.

Spurs midfield, on the other hand, could use some more reinforcement.

While James Maddison’s performance has been world-class, earning him the August Player of the Month award, and Yves Bissouma has been consistent alongside Pape Sarr, extra numbers would be helpful.

Rodrigo Bentancur, currently out due to injury, will be set to return before the transfer in question and will surely be getting minutes once he’s healthy.

Gallagher, who has yet to make a big splash at Chelsea, would likely operate in a rotational capacity for Spurs alongside Oliver Skipp and, potentially, Giovani Lo Celso. However, Lo Celso will probably be on the want-to-ship-out list.

A number of other clubs, including Bayern Munich, have been linked with the player. Between now and January, more interest could arise depending on his performance over the next few months.

Clearly, several factors will be at play before a transfer ensues, including the much-needed addition of more central defenders.
