The Spanish online publication Sport broke the news late Tuesday afternoon, saying Tottenham and Barcelona have reached a deal in principle.

However, recent reports from Fabrizio Romano confirm that Spurs have yet landed Clement Lenglet, who, if the deal goes through, is expected to cost Tottenham around £8.6 million.

For now, we wait to see if Tottenham pushes for the £8.6 million transfer.

Tottenham initially said it wouldn’t pay more than £5 million to secure the Frenchman permanently.

Stretching their upper limit by less than £4 million, while almost double the original amount, would make sense considering what Lenglet brings.

He was one of Tottenham’s most consistent central defenders, which, admittedly, isn’t saying a lot.

Lenglet was released a few weeks ago after his season loan spell in north London in which he made 26 Premier League appearances and all but one of Spurs’ eight Champions League contests.

Lenglet is left-footed and can if needed, play at left-back. However, that proposition is doubtful, considering how Ange utilizes fullbacks. Spurs will wait to confirm the signing of Maddison before deciding what to do with Lenglet, but he still in Spurs’ plans.

For now, anyway.

Signing Lenglet would also provide Tottenham with a buffer, more breathing room to sell Davinson Sanchez and, quite possibly, Eric Dier.

Although Dier will probably stay at Spurs until his contract ends at the end of the 2023-24 season. That way, as he’ll depart for free, he can sign with his preferred suitor. Only time will tell how in demand Dier is after a season where he’s expected to play second fiddle.

dark. Next. Spurs about to confirm James Maddison transfer

Hopefully Spurs get the Lenglet deal across the line as it would be an excellent bit of business, as it would add stability and depth while opening the door to sell one, potentially two players on Spurs’ death row list.
