According to The Korea Herald, South Korea’s largest English-language newspaper, Tottenham’s Son Heung-min underwent sports hernia surgery about two weeks ago.

Tottenham remained incredibly tight-lipped about Sonny’s condition, both before and after his surgery.

"According to Orthoinfo, A sports hernia is a “painful, soft tissue injury that occurs in the groin area. It most often occurs during sports that require sudden changes of direction or intense twisting movements.”"

Our friends at Cartilage Free Captain bring up an excellent point: How long did Sonny have the injury before going under the knife, and did it affect his play during the 2022-23 season?

By the club’s reluctance to share any information about Sonny’s injury, I wonder if we’ll ever know the true extent of his ailment.

One school of thought suggests it makes sense to assume he was carrying the injury for some time before getting the required surgery. That would at least explain some of Sonny’s lackluster, inconsistent play.

I’m, however, not buying that reasoning.

There’s no way Tottenham would risk the health of one of their prized assets, especially after free-falling like a stone down the Premier League table. While not mathematically eliminated from top-four contention, Tottenham was already six points adrift, having played two more matches with only five left.

Surely the club would have gotten him under the knife sooner if Sonny were carrying the injury. Unless, of course, the injury wasn’t too debilitating.

Either way, seeing Sonny get the treatment he needs is excellent news. It would be nice to see him miss international duty altogether, providing extra rest and recovery time.

Next. Daniel Levy playing risky game with Harry Kane, but what's the alternative?. dark

He’ll definitely need it when Ange Postecoglou waltzes into the training facility on July 1, ready to commence with the hellish fitness regime he’ll force upon the players.
