The ugly duckling reared its abhorrent head far too often in 2022-23. Conte’s airing of filthy laundry probably takes the cake. The fact that his rant isn’t the indisputable winner highlights the ugliness of this particular campaign.
Tottenham’s former director of football was also mired in controversy. Paratici finally left his post after losing his appeal to FIFA.
The Italian was handed a 30-month ban from activities within the Italian Football Federation – part of an investigation into alleged financial mismanagement at Juventus, which saw 11 other officials banned and the club deducted 15 points.
His untimely and unpredicted departure derailed Tottenham’s manager pursuit. Paratici was supposed to lead Tottenham’s manager hunt. Instead, Daniel Levy took charge, mirroring the early stages of the 2021 debacle.
The ugly didn’t end there.
On Sunday, April 23, Tottenham endured one of their most humiliating Premier League defeats, losing 6-1 to Newcastle at St James’ Park. In a tragic display of wholesale capitulation, Tottenham went down 3-0 in the opening nine minutes.
Finally, Richarlison’s anemic one-goal season also falls into the ugly category.
But, at least it’s all over now.
Unfortunately, Spurs supporters still won’t be able to rest easy until we find out which manager will take the reins and attempt to transform Spurs into a side we can once again be proud of.
And that might take a while.
