The first goal from Sessegnon got Tottenham moving with a head of steam, and it seemed almost inevitable that we would score again. Once again, however, the source was unexpected.

Ben Davies took some chances, and one paid off

As the match went on and Spurs controlled more and more of the ball, the fullbacks worked their way higher up the pitch. Between the extended pressure and the 20 corner kicks, Ben Davies and the defenders had many opportunities to get forward.

Davies had a couple of efforts on goal, with one drive in the second half coming close but flying wide of the post. Those opportunities were preparing Davies for his big break.

The Welshman held his nerve on the second goal as he saw the goal open up in front of him. As Mark Travers misjudged the ball and jumped into his defenders, there was Davies all alone with an open net in front of him. Davies did an excellent job of keeping his eye on the ball and calmly buried the header past a helpless defense.

After seeing Eric Dier and Kane both miss multiple headers over the last two matches, the calm, sure finish from Davies was a sight for sore eyes.

Rodrigo BentanScore is coming up big again for Tottenham

After not scoring the entirety of last year but now scoring two very timely goals in the previous two matches, Rodrigo Bentancur might be on to something here. Midweek against Sporting Bentancur rose high and towered over everyone to head home a corner kick, not too dissimilar from Davies’s goal.

On Saturday, although off a corner kick, Bentancur’s goal was quite different but equally significant.

The midweek goal allowed Tottenham to stay atop Group D and control their destiny needing only a point to advance in the Champions League. On Saturday against the Cherries, Bentancur’s goal meant Spurs could take all three points, complete a critical come-from-behind victory, and gain some confidence heading into a big two weeks before the World Cup break.

Bentancur showed calm and composure to win the game. The corner was flicked and seemingly hit a Bournemouth player’s hands, causing every Cherry defender to freeze. As some players started to raise their arms to call for something and others just stood still staring, Bentancur calmly stepped up to the loose ball and buried it in the back of the net.

Unlike the late would-be winner against Sporting, this time, the goal stood, and Bentancur had won Tottenham the game. Of course, Spurs would not have won if not for his and two more goals from unlikely sources.
