Tottenham Defensive Projections

It seems that injury will force Conte’s hand, and Spurs will have some changes in the back three, in front of keeper Hugo Lloris.

Left-back – Ben Davies

With Clement Lenglet‘s injury, Conte will likely continue sticking with the Welsh defender. Ben Davies had a solid match against Chelsea and even quietly picked up an assist. Davies switched to left fullback for the last bit of the match when Tottenham changed their shape, but he looks more comfortable in a back three.

Center-back – Eric Dier

Sunday against Chelsea, Eric Dier spent most of the day chasing players and working to limit their opportunities on the ball. Against Wolves, Dier will have a similar role but face few numbers, with Wolverhampton facing a lot of injuries, including start forward Raul Jiminez. With Cristian Romero reportedly out on the right, Dier will need to be at his best to help Spurs get their first clean sheet of the season.

Right-back – Davinson Sanchez

Davinson Sanchez played left-back much of pre-season, but with Romero out for anywhere from 10-days to four weeks – depending on what source you believe – Davinson Sanchez is likely to play for the next match of two. More comfortable on the right than the left, these will be big minutes for Sanchez to determine the future of his Spurs career, given the talent now in front of him on the depth chart in Romero.

Goalkeeper – Hugo Lloris

It has been a while since Hugo Lloris has had a clean sheet, and after conceding twice against Chelsea, the club captain will be hungry to get his first shutout of the season. After finishing last season with three consecutive shutouts, it is time for Tottenham to pick it up a notch defensively.
