Other footballers for Tottenham to consider on a free transfer

Whereas there are only a few realistic midfielder options to consider on a free transfer, several more defenders are worth considering. Danish defender and former Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen is one defender worth considering. Capable across a back three, Christensen seems destined for Barcelona, although the Catalonian club is still in a big financial mess, and anything can happen there.

More realistically, players like James Tarkowski, formerly of Burnley, and Jack Stephens, previously with Southampton, are squad players to consider. Tarkowski can play on either side as a centre-half and would realistically not be available had Burnley stayed in the Premier League. Tarkowski would also check the all-important homegrown box opening more space for a foreign player.

Likewise, Stephens would be another English player to consider. Not as well established as Tarkowski and not as capable on the left, Stephens is a lot like current Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga in that he can play several different defensive positions and even push on the right flank. Given the change likely coming to Spurs’ right side, Stephens is probably worth looking at.

The free forward market is thin.

While a few big-name midfielders and defenders are available from the Premier League, that is not the case with the free forward. The biggest name not returning to a Premier League club is Edinson Cavani, who will not be back with Manchester United. However, at 35 years old, Cavani is not a world-beater anymore.

Divock Origi, formerly of Liverpool, is an experienced Premier League player who has scored some important goals, but it seems likely Origi is heading out to Italy.

Technically, Eddie Nketiah of Arsenal is out of contract. However, he was offered a new deal and was on the retained list, unlike Alexandre Lacazetter, who was on the released list. Former Spurs player Aaron Lennon was also on the released list, but it seems unlikely the diminutive attacker would return to N17.

There are not many promising options from the Premier League release list, but there are a few Tottenham should consider as Fabio Paratici continues to remake the team.
