Spurs Projected Defence

We do not anticipate any changes to Tottenham in defence. The one possibility would be if Ben Davies moved to left wing-back, and then presumably Davinson Sanchez would come in for him. It seems unlikely that Conte would opt to use Davies at wing-back from the start.

Left-back – Ben Davies

Ben Davies has been performing solidly for Tottenham. However, his ability to contribute in the attacking half has been stifled by the inconsistent play at left wing-back in front of him. Davies would spend as much inside the opponent’s half as his own when the wing-backs are working correctly.

Centre-back – Eric Dier

Like Davies, Eric Dier has been consistent for Tottenham defensively. Neither are world-beaters, but both get the job done on their day. Dier should be more imposing defensively with the rest he is getting each week, but his play has been more tentative than assured of late. Spurs need a confident defender leading in the back, which Dier again needs to find.

Right-back – Cristian Romero

Tottenham has not quite been right the last two weeks have been most evident with Cristian Romero. The Argentine defender had been playing like one of the best defenders in the world. The timely aggression from the young defender was a hallmark of an aggressive Tottenham defence looking to keep the team on the front foot. The last couple of weeks have not had the same consistency from Romero, which Spurs desperately need.

Goalkeeper – Hugo Lloris

Despite the downturn in results over the last two weeks, it is difficult to blame Hugo Lloris. You have to go back to mid-March and Spurs’ 3-2 loss to Manchester United to find the last time Lloris conceded more than 1 goal, a span of 7 games for club and country. All season, we have seen that when the offense is not clicking, Lloris has had to work to keep Tottenham in games. Let’s hope Lloris can do that and that the team can reward those efforts with a couple of goals and some breathing room.
