Three most impressive things about Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Villa
By Gary Pearson
1. Ruthless Sonny scores hat trick
To score a hat trick is always a feat to be marvelled. But to score a hat trick on just three shots (not three shots on target, three total shots) is an accomplishment belonging to the mesosphere, which, according to Google, is one layer higher than the stratosphere (Thanks Google).
Sonny benefits massively from the space Kane and Kulu manufacture, but make no mistake, the South Korean is one of the world’s most valuable players. I’ve covered Sonny since he joined Spurs and the man is consummate professional, fully deserving of every plaudit he receives. He’s everything a manager could ever ask for.
All three strikes were as impressive as the other.
The first got Spurs off the mark just two three minutes in, a perfect start for a team that thrives on the counter. With an early goal advantage comes the promise of at least a few more opportunities, such is the requirement of the trailing team to, at some point, open up.
Villa became increasingly frustrated and were unable to negate Tottenham’s game plan.
Eventually Sonny, Kane and Kulu will break loose, especially when the opposition is chasing the match. And that’s precisely what happened yesterday afternoon, as Sonny rounded out his hat trick with two more sublimely confident finishes, both on fast break opportunities.
When Sonny is as ruthless as he was yesterday, he, like his partners in crime, is unplayable. Which bodes extremely well for Tottenham’s top-four aspirations.
