Conte’s rationale should please Tottenham fans

Friday, things finally came full circle with yet another Conte press conference. Now, a couple of days removed from another painful loss, Conte was calm and could explain his thinking.

First, Conte reiterated that after four losses in five games, some reflection is necessary to help find the solutions. Then Antonio repeated that he has a good relationship with Daniel Levy, that he is committed to Tottenham, and needs some patience. And, of course,  Conte expressed his empathy for the plight of the fans who have long suffered.

Eventually, Conte was asked about the players’ reactions to everything, and this is where you could get some insight on Conte as a coach. Conte said the only reaction players should have to work and that he wanted his players to be “angry. for the situation”. That his players should share the same anger for losing that he possesses.

As both a former player and a fan, I find this a good tactic on Conte’s part. It has been okay to lose at Tottenham for far too long and to just come in the next day smiling and carrying on. Instead, losing should be like a disease the club wants to eradicate and losing should cause pain and anger, driving one to tremendous success.

Of course, not every Spurs player will thrive in this environment, but that is all part of the process of Conte remaking this team to leave Tottenham in a better place than he found the club. If players are not as angry as the fans or the coach is about losing, they are not the right players for this coach or the club.

Whether or not Conte’s mind games are working or not with his players, we will know by the early afternoon on Saturday. Regardless, it is advisable to tread carefully around Conte if Spurs lose again.
