Three positives in Tottenham’s sensational win over City
By Gary Pearson
1. Tottenham better without the ball again
City’s dominance on the ball was never in doubt. Everyone knew Tottenham would have to soak up relentless waves of pressure from the defending champions. Regardless of whether you want to admit it, Tottenham are at their best when they have less of the ball.
It allows Conte’s side to break with lightning pace and lethal certainty. And Spurs have exactly the right personnel, both in defence and in midfield, to dispossess the opposition, play a first-time ball out of trouble and break. Hojbjerg, Dier, Bentancur and Romero are all adept at getting the ball forward quickly, facilitating Tottenham’s potent counter.
It’s not the first time Conte’s side have played excellent without the ball. In fact, it’s becoming a staple of Conte’s philosophy. And it makes sense, as hitting on the counter plays into Tottenham’s strengths, allowing space and room for their dynamic attackers to run into and create.
