Tottenham Hotspur made their supporters proud against City, as Antonio Conte’s side showcased what they’re capable of win yesterday’s thrilling 3-2 victory.

Their weren’t many negatives from an outstanding collective performance. The defence soaked up pressure expertly, allowing the attacking triumvirate the opportunity to do what they do best; strike with lethal precision on the counter.

Here’s three positives from an unforgettable, historic match at the Etihad. By the way, it was the first time Spurs have done the double against City since the 1986-1987 season.

3. Dier’s return & Sanchez’s exit the right medicine

Eric Dier was outstanding on his return to the first team. Even though everyone already knew it, Dier reinforced how indispensable he is to the team with a world-class defensive display. In combination with Cristian Romero, Dier shone brightly. He was organized, barged orders to everyone including Hugo Lloris, showed the passion needed against one of the world’s best sides and was technically sound.

He was also able to get the best out of Ben Davies, who has struggled without the Englishman’s presence.

Dier’s eight clearances were the most of any Spurs’ defender. Romero had seven and Davies knocked it clear on six occasions. Most notably Dier didn’t have one tackle all afternoon, highlighting just how well he organizes the defence around him.

Not having to make a single tackle against City is a testament to Dier’s ability to marshal the rearguard, set his backline up and organize through intangible leadership qualities. It also shows the effectiveness of Hojbjerg and Bentancur in the middle of the park.

And it was nice not seeing the erratic Davinson Sanchez commit cardinal sin after cardinal sin.
