Three reasons Gareth Bale could be on his way back to Tottenham
By Gary Pearson
2. Unfinished business at Spurs
Yes, that old chestnut. Let’s be honest. An aging Bale is never going to rid himself of the plaguing injury bug that has significantly hampered his career in recent years. It’s more about managing the pain, making sure he can play whenever possible.
His injury issues, both directly and indirectly, curtailed and lessened his impact at Tottenham during his loan spell last season. But Bale still contributed at an alarmingly efficient rate, albeit in the second half of the season against inferior Premier League teams. Regardless, Bale’s statistics were actually very impressive in his year back at Spurs, particularly when considering how inconsistently he played.
Back to that old chestnut of unfinished business. It was rather weird to see Bale, after waiting years for his return, play in front of an eerily barren, cavernous and empty Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Supporters were clamouring to see the Welshman live, in the flesh. Instead they watched on the tele, stripped of the honour to see one of Spurs’ best ever players — in his prime all those years ago — create his magic, if only in bit parts.
Bale is an ultimate competitor. He wants to win and he has for most of his career, aside from his time at Spurs — a sad and begrudging notion. He wants to go out on a high; he wants to win at the club where he ascended to superstardom; he wants to win at Tottenham. And who is going to deny him that chance?
