Tottenham at Wing-back

One of the positions most believed would be strengthened during the transfer window was ultimately overlooked in wing-back. Given that Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal, and Sergio Reguilon have all been brought in over the last two seasons, one can understand the lack of movement at the position.

While Doherty is a natural fit for the wing-back role, it is something that both Reguilon and Royal are still growing into as footballers. After having a poor outing with some crossing, Royal, in particular, has regressed a bit but still should develop under Conte’s tutelage.

It would have been nice to add Adama Traore, but Doherty and Royal can do the job. Likewise, on the left, with Ryan Sessegnon still around, there is some cover for Reguilon, although the cupboard gets pretty bare pretty quickly on the left after that. On the right, Japhet Tanganga provides a third player to rotate through if necessary; that same level of cover does not exist on the left.

Ultimately, both Reguilon and Royal have the rest of the season to prove themselves to Conte, or the team may upgrade one or both positions in the summer.
