Tottenham’s failed attempts to strengthen the side could have a marked impact on current players, who are now more likely to have a wondering eye.

The overall impact of the recent Adama Traore and Luis Diaz transfer collapses probably won’t be known for some time. The overriding negative response from a large section of supporters was immediate and resounding.

But what affect will the sobering missteps have on players themselves, especially those wanted by the biggest, baddest wolves in world football? There’s not too many on Spurs squad who have that sort of VIP access. By my estimation, Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, possibly Sergio Reguilon and Cristian Romero fall into that idolized, coveted bracket.

The first two would definitely be snapped up by the juggernauts of world football, the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona (if they weren’t as broke as a 40-year-old living in his mum’s basement), PSG, if the opportunity arose.

Surely, after seeing their club fail miserably, and in demonstratively inglorious fashion, to add bonafide elite talent to the roster, their heads will be more easily turned by potential offers from elite teams.

That goes without saying for Kane, who, well before the recent debacle, was already keen on a move to City. One can only imagine what Kane is currently thinking about recent proceedings. As if he needed another reason to fly the coup.

And then there’s Sonny, the most loyal and devoted of Tottenham servants. He bleeds lily white and would do anything for the badge. I wonder if seeing his club’s inability to attract top talent has at all made him question his future. Even Sonny, the most through-and-through Tottenham loyalist, would be forgiven for having his head turned, for momentarily dreaming of something bigger.

Winning team accolades is every player’s ultimate goal. No individual wants to go through their entire career without enjoying the incomparable taste of glory. That cruel, harsh reality is menacingly staring Kane and Son directly in the face.

While it might take some time to realize the full impact of Tottenham’s recent transfer failures, there is a real possibility the latest missteps might lead to Kane’s summer departure. That decision might be contingent on whether Spurs scrap and claw their way to Champions League qualification.

While is’t highly unlikely Son will be influenced by Kane’s wandering eye, it”s only a matter of time before even the most loyal of servants starts dreaming of greener pastures and a consistent chance of winning prestigious team trophies.

If Tottenham secure a top four berth and qualify for the Champions League, there will be nothing to worry about, at least in Sonny’s case. That coveted entry into Europe’s most prestigious tournament would provide Tottenham the platform and stature they need to attract the world’s best, correlatively offering Sonny the assistance he needs.

If the Champions League eludes Spurs, you might start seeing some chinks in Sonny’s seemingly impenetrable armour.

dark. Next. Looks like Lo Celso is on his way to Lyon

In regards to Kane, all bets are off.

Even Champions League qualification might not be enough to prevent him from leaving.

But it’s clear Tottenham’s waning influence can now only be restored by booking a place in the 2022-2023 Champions League, a feat made all the more difficult by a largely ineffective transfer period.
