Tottenham have had their heart smashed into smithereens multiple times in recent days, so are the resurfacing links to Juventus’ Dejan Kulusevski merely a flash-in-the-pan rebound or a meaningful lifeline?

Here we go again, this time with a player who has been linked to Tottenham more times in recent months than Daniel Levy to being a candidate for hair-growth restoration.

Recently a swap deal involving Giovani Lo Celso was potentially on the cards. Then a week later, about a month ago, Tottenham were seen as “frontrunners” in landing the Swede’s services.

Then the links and rumours went quiet, dead, akin to the way I felt after seeing news of Luis Diaz heading to Merseyside.

So are the latest rumours brandished by David Ornstein merely fodder to yet again inject a false sense of hope in a fanbase desperate for something positive, or is there something substantial to the latest reports?

Hopefully it’s not a rebound rumour, whereby a player previously linked to the club takes the attention off the fact that Tottenham have failed to make any headway in one of the most important transfer windows in recent memory.

Whichever way you look at it, Tottenham nation does need hope, something to cling on to. And Ornstein’s rumours are a good start. The journalist is known for his integrity and has important sources throughout the football world.

Spurs supporters are experienced enough not to get their hopes up again, as another crushing emotional blow would send some of us (me particularly) directly to the straightjacket. However, Tottenham badly require help and Kulusevski is a versatile, young and promising player, who is also available.

So while my expectations are about as low as my current morale, there is a glimmer of light with the recent Kulusevski-to-Tottenham rumours.

Next. Spurs linked to another striker in wake of failed transfer attempts. dark

Maybe this time Tottenham will pay the asking price immediately and learn from previous stakes.

Then again, maybe not. I’m just hoping (there’s that word again) that another higher powered, more ruthless and attractive team isn’t lurking in the background, waiting for their opportunity to pounce.
