Midfield

Ryan Sessegnon 4/10

Ryan Sessegnon got his second start of the campaign, but didn’t do nearly enough to justify another. Like Davies, Sessegnon struggled to contain Ziyech’s dynamism. Although you can’t solely blame Sessegnon, he didn’t offer nearly enough going forward. In his defence, it’s difficult to when your team never has the ball in the opposition half.

Pierre Hojbjerg 4.5/10

Reminiscent of the Carabao Cup semifinal first leg, Pierre and Harry Winks had a miserable time in the centre of the park. Their plight wasn’t really aided by Matt Doherty’s uncomfortable presence. Fighting a losing battle, Hojbjerg did his best to contain Spurs, but offered nothing going forward. Similar theme all around with a particularly static midfield.

Matt Doherty 3/10

Doherty was, well, Doherty. We all know by now he is isn’t good enough for this level. Today’s outing was yet more proof of that. Also didn’t help having the Irishman play in a more central role. Feels like Antonio Conte, out of desperation, has tried to turn Doherty into a utility man, which he clearly doesn’t have the capacity to embody.

Harry Winks 5/10

Worked his socks off and did as much as anyone can when chasing shadows all afternoon. Gave the ball away once in an awful position, but Hugo Lloris, with an excellent diving header, saved the Englishman’s blushes.

Japhet Tanganga 4/10

Japhet was marginally better today, but still nowhere near good enough. Let Hudson-Odoi, who missed a clear chance at the back post, behind him in the opening minutes. Ran ragged by Hudson-Odoi, who had the perpetual beating of the young defender. Tanganga took a yellow card for repeat offences, which allowed Hudson-Odoi to turn easily immediately prior to Ziyech’s opener.
