1. Steven Bergwijn’s unquantifiable heroics
If that wasn’t the most impressive per-minute performance in Tottenham history, could somebody come forth and educate me. The incident with Leicester centreback Caglar Soyuncu, in which the Turkish international flopped after the slightest Bergwijn push, incited the most productive form of anger in the Dutchman.
Bergwijn sought revenge, and inflicted it in incredibly ruthless, medieval style. His goals could change the entire complexion of Tottenham’s campaign. The brace could instil Spurs with the believe and confidence they need to surge forward as a tight-knit collective. The three points could mean the difference between between Champions League and Europe League participation.
With his future purportedly awaiting in Ajax, the Dutchman had one step out the door prior to yesterday’s match. While his heroic performance made for a better ending than a fiction tale can provide, it might not be enough to keep him at Spurs. Though you’d think Antonio Conte will definitely think twice before selling him. In fact, that type of performance was instrumental enough to take him completely off the transfer list.
Either way, Ajax will have to up the ante if they want to secure the hero’s services, paying Tottenham’s full asking price.
Based on that performance, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Spurs immediately increase their asking price. And who knows, maybe Conte, based on Bergwijn’s last few performances (including another outstanding display against West Ham in the Carabao Cup), will have a change of heart and decide to keep Spurs’ latest hero.
