3. Dele Alli

Everyone knows about Dele Alli’s well-documented fall from grace. We’ve seen it first hand over the last few seasons, with Dele’s career taking a precipitous nosedive. Unless you’re 10 years old or are a newfound Tottenham Hotspur supporter (though surely only the gluttons for punishment, the self-deprecating maniacs decided to start supporting Spurs post Pochettino’s glory years), you’ll certainly remember Dele during his pre-eminent years.

Touted as one of the world’s best attacking midfielders, Dele was an instrumental part of Pochettino’s side that came oh so close to winning the Premier League and, to a slightly lesser extent, the Champions League. At 20 years old, he was one of Europe’s most valuable young midfielders.

Dele contributed (either scoring or assisting) to 40 Premier League goals in his first 63 appearances, equalling the combined total of Frank Lampard (15), Steven Gerrard (13) and David Beckham (12). Writing that pains me deeply when considering just how much the 25-year-old has regressed. After tragically using up all nine lives in north London, he is now well and truly on Tottenham’s chopping block. It’s a stark reminder of how far he’s fallen since deservedly ascending to superstar status just a few years ago.

Spurs purchased Dele from MK Dons in 2015 for £5 million. His stock at the height of his superstardom, in 2018, peaked at about £90 million. Now, if Spurs sell, they will consider themselves extremely fortunately to receive £20 million. More likely, he’ll be sold for £15 million.

His fall from grace is so precipitous it almost dropped him off this list entirely. That’s a sobering thought.
