Tottenham need to make sure their leaders are not leaving
Arguably the two most important players for Tottenham Hotspur are Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris. Kane is the team’s clear superstar and Spurs will only go as far as Kane can take them over this season. Likewise, Lloris is the one consistent performer on defence, who regardless of coach, is going to play world-class football.
Unfortunately, the future of both players is somewhat unclear.
Hugo Lloris is currently in the final months of his contract which ends at the end of this season in mid-2022. Coach Antonio Conte was seemingly confident that things will work out and that Lloris will continue to be with Tottenham, however, there has been little indication a new contract is in the offing.
Making matters more complicated with Lloris is the fact that Tottenham does not have an obvious replacement if Lloris were to leave. Pierluigi Gollini has not impressed and behind him, Spurs only have youth with little experience.
Yes, Tottenham could easily sign a new player in the summer, however, the team is already going to have turnover and has other needs, creating a need in a position of strength seems unnecessary. Finding a quick solution, even in just one more year would be good for the team.
Harry Kane, on the other hand, does still have a contract but there are indications coming from up north that the Citizens are still interested in trying to pry Kane away from N17. Pep Guardiola recently took a veiled shot at Daniel Levy and Tottenham in talking about selling Ferran Torres to Barcelona.
All indications are that Kane is happy again in north London under the leadership of Conte and there should be no issue. That said, Sky Sports made Kane the focus of the summer and could do it again.
While a new contract is not necessary, anything from Kane and the club to squelch any rumours or innuendo before it can start would greatly benefit the club. Imaging Spurs without both Lloris and Kane seems almost unfathomable but could happen if things go south.
