5. Qualifying for the Carabao Cup Final

Ok, so it’s not the most coveted of supporters’ memories, but qualifying for a cup final, regardless of the cup, is still worth mentioning, especially when considering the amount of tumult Spurs endured in 2021.

Tottenham beat Brentford 2-0 in the semifinal for the right to play Manchester City in the final. The final was a disappointingly tentative, defensive and overly cautious display from Ryan Mason‘s side, who eventually went down to Aymeric Laporte’s 82nd minute winner. While it wasn’t meant to be, Spurs inched close to ending their 13-year barren trophy-less spell.

The anticipation and lead up to the Carabao Cup Final, however, was tainted by Jose Mourinho’s sacking. Daniel Levy made the peculiar, amateurish decision to fire Mourinho a week prior to the final. Mourinho deserved the sack, but the timing of his dismissal was questionable. He had been brought in for the primary responsibility of bringing silverware back to north London and was then prevented from finishing the job.
