Tottenham Hotspur has every right to be angry with show of disrespect

The humiliation of Harry

How a centre forward who scores the most goals in the toughest division for a mediocre side (though it pains me to admit it) finishes below the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount is as inconceivable as it is asinine.

No disrespect to the aforementioned trio, but Mahrez, Sterling and Mount combined for 25 goals, just two more than Kane’s 23. Spurs’ talisman also notched a career-high 14 assists, one more than Sterling and Mahrez’s combined total.

Two of the aforementioned three play for City, the defending Premier League champions, while Mount plies his trade for Chelsea, a Champions League side who won the most prestigious European club competition.

Not for lack of trying, Kane’s Tottenham finished seventh in the top flight and were runners up in the lowly Carabao Cup. And that’s not a knock on Harry, who doesn’t have the privilege of playing beside a cast of star-studded, otherworldly talent. Despite the palpable lack of Kane’s supporting cast, he still managed to finish atop the two most important offensive categories, goals and assists.

Yet still it wasn’t enough to crack the top 10, not even close.

If we instead measure their influence on the national stage, Kane’s 2020-2021 CV again easily outshines Mahrez and Mount’s. Sterling admittedly enjoyed an outstanding year with the Three Lions, but without Kane England would never have made it to the European Championship Final.

So it seems Kane was penalized solely for plying his club trade with Tottenham Hotspur. How else do you explain his illogical 23rd place finish in Messinald’Or rankings? It’s an embarrassment to think that so many reputable journalists can so wildly miss the mark.

Imagine if Kane amassed the same staggeringly impressive offensive numbers while spearheading Manchester City’s attack. Can you conceive of him finishing 23rd as a member of Pep Guardiola‘s world all-stars? No matter how you slice it, the answer is an unequivocal no.

If you ask me, the “all-knowing” decision makers’ inability to award Kane the credence and recognition he deserves is a shameful reflection on the power brokers who enjoy the privilege of naming world football’s best players.
