Defence

Hugo Lloris 7/10

Rarely troubled, Hugo Lloris was reliable when called upon.

Sergio Reguilon 8/10

The Spaniard enjoyed a fantastic offensive performance. He created Tottenham’s opener after a wonderful touch and pass combination. Dominant and spry, Reguilon had the run of the left side of the pitch and was rarely troubled defensively.

Eric Dier 5/10

Rarely troubled, Eric Dier enjoyed a pretty comfortable outing prior to an own goal at the death.  Just as I was about to praise Dier for a job well done, he almost single-handily ruined an outstanding Tottenham away performance. Other than the embarrassing blunder, Dier was comfortable, but it always feels like a mistake is on the horizon.

Christian Romero 6/10

The Argentine endured a difficult afternoon, especially considering the lack of pressure Newcastle put on Spurs’ rearguard. He wasn’t commanding in the air and went to ground far too early on numerous occasions, putting his defensive colleagues under unnecessary pressure. He looked laboured and uncomfortable, which isn’t surprising considering the arduous nature of the last fortnight on international duty.

Emerson Royal 6.5/10

Like Romero, Royal struggled to find his best form. He showed glimpses of proficiency but was for the most part pretty inconsistent, though he avoided making any errors of real consequence. His lazy, failed back heel led to Newcastle’s opener.
