The back-up plan: Pierluigi Gollini – B-

Tottenham Hotspur finally brought in a goalkeeper that could potentially challenge or even at some point replace captain Hugo Lloris at some point, in Pierluigi Gollini. Or so the thinking seemed to go.

Gollini has had five stars – all outside the Premier League – but has managed only one clean-sheet, the 3-0 win over Pacos de Ferreira to fully qualify for the Europa Conference League.

Gollini has had a few shaky moments with the ball at his feet, nearly resulting in calamity. However, those were issues that appeared to come from overconfidence rather than any kind of faults in his on-the-ball game. Overall, with the ball at his feet, Gollini appears to be solid with distribution and fits the scheme.

As a shot-blocker Gollini has been excellent, managing to get his gloves on just about anything that he can and should reach. The issue has not been Gollini’s shot-blocking so much as his catching and securing of the ball. Rebounds cost the team goals this season and that needs to be limited.

Despite not always appearing great, Gollini has already had a shining moment for Tottenham in the Carabao Cup like Bryan Gil. Rather than making a penalty Gollini only conceded once in the shootout with Wolves. Gollini saved Leander Dendoncker’s attempt and stared down Conor Coady and Ruben Neves who hit the post and missed.

Gollini is not ready to take Hugo’s gloves but the team is in much better shape than a few years ago if something terrible were to happen to Lloris again and he had to miss time.
