Tottenham Midfield Ratings

Before the match, the Tottenham midfield looked like it may struggle a bit on paper with the trio in the lineup. However, with both Skipp and Winks playing a bit more conservatively and Dele given the freedom to roam, the midfield did enough to win the day.

Dele Alli – 7

Dele Alli was mostly back in his preferred number 10 role, almost as a second striker for most of his almost hour on the pitch. Popping up in the right place, Dele earned and then strongly finished a penalty to open the match in the first couple of minutes. He probably would have liked to have done better with his several attempts on target, which were all saved by Obradovic. Running into the box is where Dele is at his best, Spurs need more of that and Dele needs to work to do it better.

Oliver Skipp – 7

Oliver Skipp was at times a holding midfielder and at times showed that flash of an 8 that can get box-to-box. When the lineup which included both Skipp and Winks first came out it certainly felt conservative and at times was but not necessarily because of Skipp. Giving fans a bit more with each match, Thursday, Skipp picked up one ball just inside midfield and then proceeded to dribble all the way to the top of the box and have a crack at the goal. The shoot bounced wide at the far post but showed you cannot sleep on the young midfielder who continues to look to push his game.

Harry Winks – 7

Harry Winks did his job on Thursday, which is what Spurs needed. Winks was the midfielder who stayed home most often looking to protect the defence. Winks did just that most of the evening committing a couple of professional fouls in the middle of the pitch to break up play. Winks’s best contribution was when he collected a clearance and then plopped the ball back forward for the second goal, as Lo Celso settled the pass and went on to score. Committed one poor foul near the touchline, but Gollini cleaned up the subsequent free-kick.
