Tottenham projected defence

Despite eight goals against in the last three matches in all competitions, Spurs have shown they have a little bit of depth and some quality in defense. That depth is on display in the Carabao Cup as we get a different backline than any we have seen this season.

Japhet Tanganga (RB) – After the injuries meant moving positions and a red card left him out a match to boot, Japhet Tanganga is likely very anxious to get back to his right fullback spot to start competing with Emerson Royal. Royal has been confident on the ball but has not done anything special. Alternatively, it was Tanganga at right fullback during the early success of the Tottenham season. At best, third on the center back depth chart, Tanganga gets a chance to settle back into his long-term position.

Davinson Sanchez (CB)  – Besides Japhet Tanganga at right-back another common denominator in Spurs early success included Davinson Sanchez at center back next to Tanganga. Sanchez went on international duty with Colombia and has since played seven minutes over three matches, where Tottenham conceded eight goals. It is not all Sanchez, as he was on the pitch for Antonio Rudiger‘s injury-time goal, however, Sanchez was playing really well before and hopefully can pick up where he left off almost a month ago.

Joe Rodon (CB) – Joe Rodon has seen limited opportunities overall in his season plus at Tottenham Hotspur, however, Wednesday should be a chance for him to really stake the claim of the role backing up Eric Dier and slowly build toward competing with him. Rodon has played on the left both for Spurs and at the national team level and lacking a naturally left-footed played and having two South American internationals on the right side, Rodon has a real opportunity here. One he needs to take.

Ben Davies (LB) – I really wish this could be Ryan Sessegnon as he has more future with the club than does Ben Davies, however, Sessegnon cannot seem to get healthy and Ben Davies is typically there. Not the dynamic player that Sergio Reguilon is, Davies is going to have to find ways to get forward and help influence the attack Reguilon has not been playing great, if Davies wants more time, he needs to show it.

Pierluigi Gollini (GK) – Hugo Lloris gets the afternoon off and Pierluigi Gollini gets another shot between the posts. Gollini struggled to catch the ball last week in France giving up a couple of rebounds, one of which was very costly to Spurs. Gollini will want to get a clean sheet and will have to make 2-3 big saves to do it.
