Tottenham in the advanced midfield
We are using the term advanced midfield because as of now, Tottenham is playing without a true #10 and are using Harry Kane in that role. Instead of the #10 with two wide players we got last season, we have the two box-to-box midfielders working up the flanks.
On the left side of the three midfielders, Dele Alli has shown a willingness to run on both ends of the pitch and work to keep his spot defensively. He has also shown some ability to still get into the box but has as of yet connected in open play with a goal.
Thus far on the right side, we have seen Højbjerg who continues to show he can do more than win back the ball. While his ability to win back the ball in more advanced positions in this new role should help the team, it is all the other things with the ball the Viking has been demonstrating that certainly catch the eye.
In reality, both Højbjerg and Dele better be working as there are able-bodied players behind them. Giovani Lo Celso should be pushing both players for time but his potentially limited availability could hamper that opportunity. Lo Celso is more creative and crafty with the ball than either Dele or Højbjerg and there are definitely going to be times where the Spurs will need it.
The other midfielder on the senior roster is Tanguy Ndombele. Ndombele has yet to feature this season but has been seen plenty in the team photos from the club. Further, Ndombele has been added to both the Conference League and Premier League player lists. Ndombele is the real wildcard of the bunch as the Frenchman has talent just dripping off him but has yet to put it all together consistently for Tottenham.
Tottenham has a very talented and if they stick to a midfield three, relatively deep midfield, without even considering any of the plethoras of wingers in the side. If the team can get some creativity, assists, and a few goals from the midfield while consistently protecting the defense and limiting odd-numbered attacks, the Spurs can have a successful season.
