Tottenham Hotspur at left fullback for the 2021/22 season
By Aaron Coe
Ben Davies, leader of the Spurs second team
Last season Ben Davies made 38 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur, with nearly half – 18 – coming from games outside the Premier League. While Davies did make 20 appearances him the league only 14 were starts.
Alternatively, of the 18 non-league matches, Davies started 17 of the 18 and further was named captain on 8 of those 18 appearances. The armband was not just some ceremonial thing for Davies to feel better about playing at Wycombe, heck Gareth Bale was starting.
Rather, those turns as the official referee liaison for the team reflect his leadership role and trustworthiness for the club. That trend has continued into this season with the new staff as Davies was the captain for the first Pacos de Ferreira match – Kane was captain for the second game.
While Davies would struggle to cover Adama Traore all day but has the savvy and field presence to cover all but the most athletic very well. Davies is a capable passer that is willing to push forward but prefers not to get caught out of position.
One of Davies’ biggest strengths is his ability to play left center-half in a back three, something really only he has done with any kind of regularity for the team. Even then it is mostly with Wales when Davies plays in that position but he still does it.
With Davies, like Reguilón, Tottenham knows what they will get. The question is what happens if either goes down for more than a week or two and how the team can cover it. Ideally, both stay healthy all season long and Tottenham gets consistent, quality play from the left-back position all season.
