Tottenham Hotspur at left fullback for the 2021/22 season

Sergio Reguilón for the present and future
When Sergio Reguilón was purchased from Real Madrid last summer it was with both the present and future in mind. Over the first half of last season when Tottenham was playing well and flying high, the young Spaniard was a big part of that success.
Three of Sergio’s four assists in the Premier League last season came before his non-football injury suffered over a January break. At that point, Tottenham had lost only two matches through 19 in the league,
While Reguilón was out injured the club lost four out of five matches and of course the team never fully recovered. To place all that blame on Reguilón’s injury or his replacement in Davies is not fair or appropriate.
Reguilón’s injury showed why Tottenham needs three left fullbacks
It was not so much that Ben Davies is not good enough to cover for Reguilón or vice versa. Rather, it was the loss of the balance from rotation the club had to that point. Over the 22 days of matches that Reguilón missed, Tottenham played seven games and Ben Davies played every minute of every one of them.
Included in those seven matches was the 120 minutes against Everton, leaving Davies rather spent. Thus when Reguilón finally returned in late February after all those losses in the league and the FA Cup, Davies was less available putting too much load on Reguilón.
Ideally, Reguilón does not get injured this season and he can platoon across competitions with trusty veteran Ben Davies.
