Is this Hugo Lloris’ last season at Spurs?

The reality is that going into his 10th season with the club, Hugo Lloris is actually on the last year of his current deal. The team spent a bit of time last season trying to resign the French captain but the style of play was likely never going to allow it.

Over the last several seasons, the volume of shots and activity for Hugo Lloris has really gone up as Tottenham went from a more attack-minded team to a defensive, counter-attacking squad. We have seen with Santo in charge, things are starting to change a bit, and if Tottenham can get back to asking Hugo to make one or two big saves along with a few routine ones each match rather than a handful of big saves and double-digit saves total, then maybe Lloris will stick around for a few more seasons.

Tottenham still have a good one on their hands

The reality is that Hugo Lloris is still a darn fine keeper who does not have any real glaring weaknesses. Not as much of a sweeper-keeper as he once was, Lloris can still come off his line and play the ball outside of his box when necessary.  Lloris has also struggled the last few seasons with distribution, however, moving to more quickly recycling of the ball under Santo should help that.

Starting the season off with three straight clean-sheets and 12 saves from the 3 matches, including facing very aggressive teams in Wolves and City, Lloris looks ready to keep his job. Of course, if a new contract cannot be signed and come January if Hugo’s agents start talking to different teams, things could get a bit messy.

For now, we can appreciate having a great goalkeeper and take solace in knowing that we also have a strong backup and maybe even some competition.
