Several Tottenham players were in World Cup Qualifiers Wednesday
By Aaron Coe
European football clubs have entered the first scheduled stoppage of the season as FIFA squeezes in World Cup Qualifiers before next fall’s event, so how did Tottenham players do Wednesday?
Wednesday marked the start of the current round of World Cup qualifiers taking place all over the globe. UEFA kicked proceedings off for everyone with several matches on Wednesday, including three involving Tottenham Hotspur players, so how did the lads fair?
Results a mixed bag for Tottenham players
Even though Tottenham was 3 from 3 with players eligible for and playing a full 90 minutes. However, only one of the three men was likely happy after his match, which was our Viking Pierre Højbjerg. The three men combined to go 1-1-1 on the evening, so what happened?
Højbjerg continues to shine for club and country
Pierre Højbjerg was excellent this past summer for Denmark, playing in a much more advanced role than he did under Jose Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur last season. That success has carried over for the Spurs, as Højbjerg has been playing in a more advanced role with Oliver Skipp as the lone holding midfielder.
On Wednesday as Denmark continues to try and overcome the loss of Christian Eriksen in the middle of the pitch, Højbjerg was used next to Mikkel Damsgaard as one of the two more attacking central midfielders.
The efforts paid off for Højbjerg and Denmark as the Pierre had an assist on the first goal and the Danes seemingly cruised 2-0 over Scotland.
Disappointing day for Hugo Lloris and France
Overall it was likely a very disappointing day for Hugo Lloris and France who drew 1-1 at home against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Les Bleus actually fell behind in the first half as Edin Dzeko beat Lloris with a drive from distance outside the box. The play came off a poor giveaway by France and then no one stepped in front of Dzeko who caught Lloris.
Fortunately for France Antoine Griezmann equalized a couple of minutes later. I say fortunately because the ball literally bounced off of Griezmann’s back into the goal. And then just five minutes into the second half, a VAR review turned Jules Kounde‘s yellow card to a red and France finished the game with 10 men.
Doherty, Republic of Ireland suffer heartbreak Tottenham knows well
There is no doubt that of the three Spurs players participating on Wednesday, it was Matt Doherty who had to feel the most disappointed and hard done. Doherty played well overall for his country receiving an 8 rating from whoscored.com. Doherty played on the left side of a midfield four in a 3-4-2-1 lineup. Doherty had five successful dribbles and three out of four tackles.
However, this is a team game and ultimately the team left very disappointedly. Ireland had taken the lead only a few minutes before the half on a corner kick. the Republic of Ireland held the lead for almost the entirety of the second half but not quite.
At the 89th minute, who else but Ronaldo would draw the match. Then at the death, five full minutes into added time Ronaldo headed home his second and left the Doherty and the Republic of Ireland stunned.
Action for Tottenham players continues on Thursday as Harry Kane is likely to lead the line for England and the Spurs South American contingent begins CONMEOBL qualifying.
