Tottenham players in on a loan

From time to time Tottenham Hotspur has been known to fill a hole or two in the squad with a loan. More often than not, however, Tottenham is taking a player on loan with an option to buy. It is the latter that is the case with both loan players at Tottenham this season.

Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero are both on loan from Atalanta and Tottenham have an option to make the deals permanent with both players. It is thought by many that the Romero deal is an obligation to purchase, whereas the Gollini deal truly is an option.

Romero technically had to be loaned given he was technically on loan with a purchase option to Atalanta from Juventus, to begin with. While Atalanta could make their move permanent this window, rules prohibit a club from turning around and then re-selling that player in the same window.

Gollini and Romero about the now for Tottenham

Whereas all of the other loan situations for Tottenham are about players getting playing time so they can develop, Gollini and Romero are both at Tottenham with the present in mind. Romero was the Serie A defender of the year last season and before Davinsonn Sanchez did a complete 180 to start this season seemed destined to start almost immediately.

Romero will add real depth to the unit and over time he is likely to find his way into the starting XI. As for Gollini, he almost assuredly will play in all of the non-premier league competitions for Tottenham. Whether or not the Italian national team keeper is going to take Hugo Lloris‘ job or not remains to be seen but he is certainly the best competition for the position Lloris will have faced in his time at Tottenham.

With both players going out and coming in on loan, Tottenham will be hoping the system works, providing both the player development and quality minutes the club needs.
