Tottenham Starting Defense

With two wins from two and no goals conceded, despite playing Manchester City – who has score 10 goals in their other two matches – there is no reason for Tottenham to make any changes in the defense at this time. Some consistency in the starting defense can go a long way toward developing a winning team.

Left-back: Sergio Reguilón

With Ismaila Sarr opposite him, is very likely that Sergio Reguilón has a busy day on Sunday. Watford may not have a lot of the ball but when they do get it, expect Sarr to be the primary target. Sergio has had a decent start to the season, particularly in being able to push forward into the attacking half. This may be more difficult Sunday and he may be asked to play more defense than he wants. Of course, if Reguilón can push up that extra defensive assignment may help keep Sarr under wraps.

Center-half: Eric Dier

With injuries to both Cameron Carter-Vickers and Joe Rodon, Eric Dier was in the starting line-up midweek against Pacos de Ferreira in the Conference League. After receiving a lot of criticism last season Dier has been steady in the back this season, showing good leadership and clearing the ball well. Until Tottenham bring in another left-footed defender or Joe Rodon gets healthy, expect a steady diet of Dier.

Center-half: Davinson Sanchez

After his performance midweek, there may be some clamoring for Cristian Romero to get his first Premier League start. However, in two matches this season, Davinson Sanchez has hardly made a misstep. Like Dier, Sanchez struggled last season for the Spurs. However, after a good summer for Colombia Sanchez has been focused and strong. The ONLY reason for Sanchez not to start would be if he is going to be sold still this summer, otherwise, the job is still very much his.

Right-back: Japhet Tanganga

Coming into the season one of the big question marks for Tottenham Hotspur was who was going to be the right fullback. After two matches in the league, there is little doubting that the job is Japhet Tanganga’s to lose. The young defender has shown excellent work defending on the ball and has been even better than one might think going forward. Eventually, the team will let him make a long throw-in into the box like Brentford does and maybe the defender will start racking up some assists.
